The wylde magic of the Fae comes from what they call "The Mists of Creation", or simply "The Mists". Fae have access to the magic of the mists through their Birthrights.
Using the form of the Birthright, or supernatural ability, as a funnel, they can draw the mists through and somewhat control their own fae magic. Each fae develops individual birthrights as they mature.
Having control over two different birthright types is generally considered to be a sign of maturity and it is at this time that a fae is granted a full name based on their own abilities rather than those of their parents. For instance, a Satyr who is originally called "Tara, precious child of Morgan" is given a new name when she develops healing and hiding magic. Her new name might be something akin to "Tara, healer of those who find her" or simply "Tara, Satyr of Healing and Hiding".
The term "Ascendant" within a fae's title has a very specific meaning. Those few who carry this term within their name are believed to have developed that particular birthright as far as the Mists will allow any fae to control. Those who are "Ascendant" are generally quite feared because no one is certain what they may be capable of.
A fae who is exiled, however, is barely fae at all. Those forced to live permanently among the humans are said to have no access to the mists whatsoever. Separate from the magic that created them, these fae-turned-mortals are only ever spoken of with pity and shame.
